Does the navy ask your references if you've smoked weed?

i am joining the navy but dont know weather to tell my recruiter that i have tried weed a few times. (last time was a few months ago and i dont want to again.) on some of the papers i am to fill out it has three personal references, will they call these people and ask if i have done anything ie: including done drugs? thanks for your help
