What it takes to be a private investigator?

im a senior in high school and i have always been the trype of person to spy..so i was thinking maybe a career in investigation? but idk what all i would have to go thru to do it? how many years of college etc. and also i am wanting to be a spy against cheating with spouces and what not..can someone help me?
